Stone, water and silence.
Sassalda is a thermal bath above Vallorsca, at 1,250 metres. It sells two hours in the water at a time, and nothing else.
Cut, not built.
The four pools were cut into one bed of hard stone over eleven months. Every wall still shows the marks of the saw, and we left them: polished stone is slippery when wet.
The spring rises from far below the valley floor and reaches the pools at 36°C, at 85 litres a minute. Nothing is added to the water, and every pool is replaced every six hours.
